Former Teen Mom star, Jenelle Evans and her husband, David caught some major criticism from fans after they posted a YouTube video in which they commentated on Teen Mom: Family Reunion episodes, and blatantly mocked Amber Portwood’s mental health struggles.
Jenelle and David were not invited to film for the new show, but they made a point to let fans know their thoughts on the show.
In the YouTube video, Jenelle and David were watching episode 2 of the series, in which drama unfolded between Jade Cline and Ashley Jones. During the drama, Jenelle’s former co-star, Amber Portwood can be seen attempting to mediate the drama between the other girls.
Amber has a long history of mental health issues that she has shared publicly many times in the past. In the episode, Amber can be saying that she is “waiting for my meds to kick in” during breakfast with the rest of the girls.
The comment immediately caused Jenelle and David to begin taking digs at Amber and her mental health issues.
It was so bad that David actually imitated and did his own impression of Amber.
Jenelle wasn’t much better, as she made some harsh comments after Amber stated how much she has changed over the years.
Jenelle said:
“She’s like, ‘Oh, yeah, I used to be like that.’ Amber, you just went ranting about me on your Instagram.”
David added:
“She always says stuff like that, and then she’s like, ‘I need to take my meds before I do something crazy.’
David then said a comment that was really not supportive to those who struggle with medication and mental health issues.
He said:
“I’m gonna tell you something right now, you have not changed if you need to take meds every morning to act normal.”
Jenelle then commented on Amber’s legal issues and said:
“I think you can talk about how great you’ve been when you stop getting in trouble.”
David concluded with:
“When you haven’t been on probation for about ten years, let’s hear your recovery story – when you recover. You’re making excuses for yourself.”
Fans were pretty mad about the lack of empathy and knowledge surrounding the stigma of mental health and even called the couple “monsters”.
One fan noted:
“Some people do need meds to be their version of normal and I thank God that they take them every day. I have some family members that deal with severe mental episodes and if not on these meds, they could not live a normal, functioning life. Just wanted to put it out there.”
Another added:
“Aren’t y’all on Xanax to be normal? Jenelle got accused of stealing Devon’s Xanax and she said we have our own!”
And another concluded:
“Jenelle really doesn’t get it, does she?”
